Myriad and Cambridge University team up for Darwin celebrations

15 October 2008
Cambridge University has appointed Myriad PR to help publicise the huge programme of Darwin events it has planned for 2009.

Next year marks the 200th anniversary of the famous naturalist’s birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of his most famous work, The Origin of Species.

To celebrate, the university is hosting a range of events to raise awareness of Darwin’s huge contribution to science, medicine, the arts, theology, philosophy and many other disciplines.

The Darwin 2009 Festival, for instance, which runs from July 5-10, will include exhibitions, lectures, workshops and debates, and feature contributions from some of the leading lights of the scientific world, including Sir David Attenborough, Richard Dawkins and Steve Jones.

Another programme highlight is ‘Endless Forms’, a unique exhibition running at The Fitzwilliam Museum from June 16 to October 4, which will explore the influence of Darwin’s discoveries on visual artists and their work.

Other Cambridge venues playing host to Darwin events in 2009 include The Botanic Garden, Cambridge University Library and The Zoology Museum.

Darwin 2009 Festival director Miranda Gomperts said: “Cambridge University’s role in shaping Darwin as one of history’s most important scientists and thinkers was considerable. Our many and varied events celebrate this, as well as take his legacy forward to new generations. We felt that Myriad had the contacts and expertise to communicate this on an international, national and regional level.”

Steve Weaving, Managing Director of Myriad PR, added: “We are delighted to have been appointed by the university to help promote such a prestigious and important programme of events, and look forward to helping it achieve the success it deserves.”
